Entry: "The Inner Mongolia trip started off with a combination of the "travel complexity" and "insanely nice strangers" themes - for, as I exited the baggage pick-up area, I realized that the hostel had not sent anyone to pick me up, and I was in a totally new city filled with totally new people who spoke a totally different language (Mongolian). No problemo though, I'll just grab a map and a taxi, and explain to him as best I can where to take me. "Oh, look at this very nice taxi driver coming up to give me a ride. (Show him the location). Ni zhidao mao? Dui? Alrighty, let's go!" We begin to pull away...and a 50-ish blond woman throws herself in front of the car and starts banging on the window! She opens my door, pulls me out, and begins explaining that it's an unauthorized taxi driver who will take me for an insane ride, charge me vast sums of money, and then most likely charge me even more to let me take my bag out of the trunk. Wow, jesus, thanks Lady! So, she talks to the taxi driver, negotiates a price, and then we both jump in to share. Turns out she is from Wisconsin (complete with an awesomely hysterical version of speaking Mandarin with a Wisconsin accent), and has been teaching English in Hohhot for ...
